One of the promises Justin Trudeau made was that 2015 would be the last time Canadians elect federal government, using the current electoral system. Trudeau also said he would introduce legislation on voting reform within 18 months of forming a government. I’m going to hold him accountable to that promise.
In the case that the current first-past-the-post system gets replaced by a mixed proportional representation system, I wouldn’t be too upset. Canvassing for a conservative party candidate this past election, I came across many people who said “we like the candidate but not Harper.” After all the candidate had done for his riding and constituents, he ended up losing. This really upset me, it’s almost as if the local guy doesn’t matter. With mixed proportional representation, HE WOULD MATTER, and all he did for the people WOULD MATTER. Because of our current electoral system, we suffer from “waves.” Last election, it was the Liberal wave that claimed the jobs of many hardworking MP’s. With mixed proportional representation, people could vote for the local guy, and forget about his leader and party. They could vote for him because of all the things he has done for his people. When “waves” occur with our current electoral system, many unqualified and inexperienced candidates get elected, just because they had their name on the ballot. This last election, many Liberals got elected just because they were liberals. Some of them are flukes, and have no political experience or capabilities. It is just because they were Liberal, that they were elected. With mixed proportional representation, that too, would be eliminated. You could vote for your local guy, no matter what political stripe he is of, and vote for a Prime Minister of your choice.
